If I had taken the time to write down all my goals for the time off between work and school the list would have probably looked like this:
Learn Spanish
Pick up golf
Get in great shape
Finish my screenplay(s)
Perform and sell off remaining albums
Read and complete some prep work for b-school
Etc. . .the list goes on and on.
Well fast forward to Labor day and here I am. I have travelled the country over and can now triple bogy most holes. I have read half of the cartoon guide to statistics and have learned enough to know I have a lot to learn. I never once picked up a guitar nor did I start revising a script.
On the plus side I can now inquire, "donde esta el bano?" though I probably will not understand the response. I can also now run a few miles and am still able to walk the following day. The summer wasn't entirely a waste.
Truth be told, this once in a life time extended vacation was put to great use. Though I failed to knock off many of my initial goals, I accomplished so much more with my time than I had thought possible. Instead of peddling my records at the 3rd Street Promenade, I was able to hold my nephew Sam (now 4 months old) back in Chicago for the first time. Rather than finishing a movie concept that at second thought seems to be a comedic version of the poorly received Lucky You starring Drew Barrymore, Eric Bana, and Robert Duvall, I stood next to my best friends as they said their marital vows.
So though I did not finish what I originally had set out to do with my summer I would not change a thing. Sure I could have already known how to utilize a decision tree to make a difficult quantitative analysis but then I might not have learned what became of Voldemort.
